Occupation Research

The amount of information that is available regarding the working life of your ancestors depends on the occupation they had. Trade directories provide useful sources by which to track local businessmen, watch committee minutes can be searched to locate references to policemen, hospital records can be searched to identify information on nurses. Information relating to soldiers, sailors and airmen who served in HM Forces can also be found. Schools log books or attendance registers, if available, will provide not only information on scholars but also teachers. In some cases apprenticeship records may also be found. Other occupation records are hidden in less well known places such as council and trade union records.

The amount of information available depends on the occupation, the amount of information recorded at the time and what records have been handed over to the archives/libraries.
